Frequently Asked Questions About 2026 Mileage Rates
When do the 2026 IRS mileage rates take effect?
The 2026 standard mileage rates are effective for business miles driven on or after January 1, 2026. For expenses incurred in 2025, use the 2025 rates (70¢ business, 14¢ charity, 21¢ medical).
Why did the business mileage rate increase for 2026?
The IRS commissions an annual study of fixed and variable automobile operating costs. The 2026 increase to 72.5 cents per mile reflects higher costs for fuel, insurance, depreciation, and vehicle maintenance compared to 2025.
Can W-2 employees deduct mileage on their taxes?
No. Under current tax law (made permanent by the OBBBA), W-2 employees cannot deduct unreimbursed business mileage as an itemized deduction. However, employers can use the standard mileage rate to reimburse employees tax-free under an accountable plan.
What records do I need to keep for mileage deductions?
The IRS requires adequate records including: date of each trip, destination/business purpose, miles driven, and total miles for the year. This calculator's Weekly Log mode helps you maintain IRS-compliant records that you can export and save.
Can I use actual expenses instead of the standard mileage rate?
Yes. You can choose to deduct actual vehicle expenses (gas, oil, repairs, insurance, depreciation, etc.) instead of using the standard mileage rate. However, if you use the standard rate in the first year you use the car for business, you can switch methods in later years. If you use actual expenses first, you generally must continue with that method.
Is this calculator really free?
Yes! This calculator is completely free to use with no hidden fees, no registration required, and no limitations on how many calculations you can perform.
Does this work on mobile devices?
Yes! This calculator is fully responsive and works on smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers.
